Prerequisites for Windows 8 Samba Client

Samba Server:  Remote machine with any OS (where the shared files are stored)
Samba Client:  Local machine with Windows 8 (where you access shared files from)

The accurate prerequisites for using Windows 8 Samba Client to access shared files on remote server:

(Start these services if they are not running, and no reboot is required.)

  • Workstation
  • TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper  (Even if you don’t need name resolution. Bad design of M$)

(If you should change the value, you have to reboot the machine to make it effective.)

  • [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters]
    “RequireSecureNegotiate”=dword:00000000
(This is for backward compatibility with old Samba protocol.)

The following items are irrelevant to Windows Samba Client. (i.e. they are not required.)

  • Control Panel:  Credential Manager
  • Service:  Computer Browser
  • Service:  Distributed Link Tracking Client
  • Service:  HomeGroup Listener
  • Service:  HomeGroup Provider
